Clematis is known as the queen of climbers. Its vining stems will happily scramble up trellises, over arbors and through other plants, creating a tapestry of beautiful color. This carefree perennial blooms from early summer through fall, producing star-like blossoms that can be white, pink, red, blue or purple.

Clematis are one of the most rewarding plants a gardener can grow. Once established, this vine will grow up and present an intense amount of flowers.

Clematis is a popular climbing plant, and there are over 200 species, with countless hybrids and cultivars. Large flower hybrids tend to be the most popular and flower during the summer, with a range of colors including purple, white, and red.

The plant prefers to have its roots in the shade while the top growth is located in full sun. Clematis is a genus of about 300 species within the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae.

Their garden hybrids have been popular among gardeners, beginning with Clematis × jackmanii, a garden standby since 1862; more hybrid cultivars are being produced constantly. They are mainly of Chinese and Japanese origin.
