Prayer Plant (Maranta Leuconeura)

Prayer plants make an amazing addition to your collection of indoor houseplants. They have dark green leaves with light green/white and red strip running down its spine. This plant gets its unique name because of the unique nature of its leaves. They fold in an upright position at night, resembling that of folding hands in prayer.

The Red Prayer Plant has soft dark green leaves with feathered, painterly-like centers of light green and red veins. The Red Prayer Plant is an easy plant—place it in a sunny spot, keep it’s soil damp, and mist it’s leaves once a week and it will flourish.

There are various varieties of Prayer Plants, namely ranging from 40 to 50 species of the same. Each has different characteristics but has a distinct similarity of spines that are visible at the centre.

They are slightly more difficult to tend to than their contemporaries Pothos or Snake plants.

Instructions for growing Prayer plants indoors:

Light: They are intolerant of direct sunlight and hence it is better to give them indirect sunlight filtered through windows. They are quite tolerant of low light areas.

Water: These gorgeous beauties do not like to be kept dry. During summer it is advisable to water them every once a week; however, in winters you can reduce watering it. Do not overwater the soil in fear of killing the roots.

Temperature: They thrive best in humid conditions. Keep it properly hydrated if you are growing it in dry weather conditions.

We’ll be sharing more about this plant in future.
